One of the most wonderful things about being a coach and a personal trainer is that I get to know so many different people. People that I probably wouldn’t ordinarily get to know.
I think that we all get kind of stuck in our own insecurities, our own idea of what we might have in common with someone and really, we can box ourselves in. What a shame..let’s try hard to not do that. I’m going to.
One thing, and Robert can vouch for this is that I really do love all kinds of people with all kinds of interests. Often, the quirkier the better. I just really like someone who is comfortable with who they are and yet…and yet willing to reach out, explore and try new things!
As a coach or a personal trainer, I see this all the time. People stepping up and saying, “I’m going to try this. I’m going to do this. I’m a little intimidated. I’m a little scared. I may not being any good. But, I’m going to try.” I love that. My athletes inspire me everyday. They inspire me to explore, to be brave, to keep learning and not let myself get too comfortable.
I’ve been practicing yoga now since September. Exploration is part of what is fun about yoga. Can my body do that? If not today..I’ll keep working slowly and steadily towards it. Wednesday in yoga I got into a pose that has intimidated me. I was really prepped with hamstrings and hip flexors really long and bam! I did it. I don’t know the name but it’s a one leg pose and your arms are encircling the leg that extends straight from your body. Yes, it’s pretzel like. My instructor, step by step coaxed me into it and it was awesome to get there even if just for a few seconds.
Recently, an athlete reached out to me. She brought goodies to help me get started in a new hobby. She gave a lesson today. Now, I’m going to sew! She reached out, encouraged me, peaked my interests with some pretty fabrics and ideas of something I could make and use in yoga. She made it relevant to me. She made it accessible. Wow. What a gift. I’m so appreciative.
So, what I’m trying to say is that I hope in some way I can do what she did for others with cooking/nutrition, strength training, swim, bike, run/triathlon…to reach out, peak an interest, encourage and make it accessible. These are things I love and enjoy that have enriched my life.
My sewing coach is helping me find and enjoy what has enriched her life, what she loves and what she enjoys. Funny thing is she’s strength training, swimming, biking and running….and beginning to enjoy and learn the things that have enriched my life!
Isn’t this how it’s supposed to work? I think so.
So, what can you share? Who can you share it with. Go ahead…reach out….my athlete/sewing coach saw a little tiny spark in me and she lit it. She didn’t second guess whether I would have the time or would really be interested…she just knew she loved it and chances are I might too and she invested in that possibility.
